Are you a leader? Who are you lifting up?

How does a great leader lead through an era of quiet quitting, recession, burnout and internal and external unrest – often whilst feeling pretty burnt out themselves?

As a leader today, there really is so much challenge and change, there are so many changes in internal and external politics, policies and people, it is often really hard to know even where to start, what do our teams actually need and how on earth do we find the energy and skills to share it with them?

Will our bosses help us? Sometimes yes, sometimes no, sometimes they are actually pretty overwhelmed themselves

So what to do, what does great leadership through change really look like?

What our teams really need from us at this time, is for us to set a new direction and share a compelling vision of the future so they can see the possibilities and what success looks like. Our role when leading change is to help others become accustomed to the rollercoaster ride of emotions and vulnerabilities that change creates - h...

We can't run fast with baggage!

As Dina Asher-Smith, the British sprinter says, “you can’t run fast with baggage, you gotta throw it out”

To be honest, I am a bit of a cliché. First teams for sport at school, good degree, high flying career – got it all, you may say. And you would be right, the ‘all’ including a lot, and I mean, a lot - of baggage

But this isn’t about me, this is about you and frankly, what I want to share with you so that you can stop wasting your time and start living life on a totally different level, start enjoy running really, really fast – because you may well think that the way you feel today, successful on the outside, with baggage on the inside – is the only way to be. You may think you have reached your potential and the thought of really ‘taking it up a level’, really smashing it, really running fast – at work, at home, in your whole life - is something you just don’t have the time and energy for

Well, I am hear to tell you – go for it!

This isn’t about the toxic over performance you...

How do I futureproof myself?

futureproof progressfull Nov 09, 2022

How do I futureproof myself? Is one of the questions you may hear a lot, we certainly do...

Today, there is so much change, so many politics, so many unforeseen opportunities and risks – how to navigate the world of work to have a successful future, is not always immediately obvious

One of the biggest shocks for people is that the answer is not to keep your head down, being diligent, and do your best. This is not a blueprint for future success

Surprised? You are not alone...

Trusted by over 14,000 senior executives, high performers and high potentials, we don’t just know what good looks like, we know what great looks like. In reality, we can see that very few outwardly successful people actually know and truly understand the rules of the game we call business. It doesn’t matter how great you think you are - if no one else thinks you’re great then you’re never going to progress and be truly successful in the world of work - today or tomorrow

We observe that most outwardly successfu...

Start connecting to stop quiet quitting

If you are an ambitious and determined leader of people, you will no doubt be aware of the latest leadership challenge to get your energy, talent and leadership skills focussed on. Quiet quitting

The importance of improving our people’s engagement and energy has increased focus with the U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy releasing the Surgeon General’s Framework for Mental Health & Well-Being in the Workplace. The Surgeon General’s message released with this framework is powerful. It is a signal to leaders and employers that it is time to stop asking questions about whether employee well-being is their responsibility. There are 5 areas which are called out, protection from harm, connection and community, work-life harmony, mattering at work and opportunity for growth

A recent Gallop poll also found that over 50% of the US workforce are disengaged. This may well be a shocking statistic, yet when you remove your own ‘too busy, too burnt out, too ambitious’ spectacles and look around...

What can we learn from trees in autumn?

We can't change the past, but if we do something now, we can change our future

Have you ever wondered, what is one of the biggest things you can do now to change your future?

When we think about "choosing to do something today that our future self will thank us for", as actor Sean Patrick Flanery encourages - typically we think of improving our health, sorting out a pension, gaining a qualification. We very rarely think of leaning in, living more fully in the moment, and letting go of our baggage

The truth is, one of the biggest ways we can improve our futures, is by letting go of the rubbish that a lot of us carry around in our heads today

We spend our entire lives in our minds, yet very few of us ensure they are a great place to be by carrying out a regular practice of tidying up, chucking out and organising what is in there - a bit like trees letting go of their leaves in autumn

This means most of us spend our lives with messy, complex, unfounded lies which we tell ourselves ab...

Wellbeing is no longer woo-woo

According to Harvard’s recent publication, where they reference Gartner's research with the same findings - Wellbeing is one of the top 10 trends for businesses in 2022

Yet both publications highlight that even though leaders and HR departments are trying their best, neither existing offers in the marketplace, nor the existing offers made by companies for their staff, are engaging employees. In reality, take up is slim

So, if we know Wellbeing is so important that even companies are now starting to have it as a key metric - the enlightened ones anyway - why are we missing the mark when it comes to actually offering things that can help? If Wellbeing solutions are so needed, why are they not being taken up, when they are offered?

For a lot of us, the idea of having our Wellbeing ‘measured’ via an App - with the stats visible to the board alongside revenue and profit targets, or that the new key performance indicator when bumping into board members in the corridors, being the width a...

How high can you soar?

Have you ever wondered, I mean really wondered – without your baggage, just with curiosity – how much potential you actually have? How high you can actually soar?

The thing is, a lot of us have a very limited perspective on what we can achieve, what our capabilities are … ‘I can’t dance, I can’t do detail, I can’t focus, I am rubbish with numbers’. Jo has an expression she uses all the time, "Get rid of the nonsense in your head, it’s a lie! Delete it. It is a waste of your energy. Instead focus on what is true”

In reality we are all much more capable than we think we are – the thing is, discovering our potential does require courage – it doesn’t just happen. A quote we really love from the Nobel prize winning poet TS Eliot is, "only those who will risk going far, can possibly find out how far one can go”

So what’s the risk? Why does fulfilling our potential require courage?

Well – it’s about feedback…

Having either coached or facilitated over 14,000 plus global senior executi...

The commercial case for wellbeing

“Poor mental wellbeing in our key employees is probably a bigger risk to our business than increasing inflation rates right now” a CEO of a design company said to me last week

“The thing is, as a business we are doing really well, but our lead designer has just been signed off for burnout, our clients are being really understanding, and we are supporting him as best we can, so we are OK – but really, employee wellbeing is becoming our top priority"

This successful CEO is not alone...

Looking after wellbeing is now on all our to-do lists. All employees are asking for it and super smart CEOs, and CPOs know that if you are really interested in wellbeing for your staff, then what makes a real difference, is to do something to set them up, so they can handle difficult situations, live their best lives, and essentially thrive during changing times

From finance directors of large corporations to the owner of your local artisanal bakery - everyone is now in agreement that wellbeing is impo...

Gaining poise & self-belief

Today, when you meet your friends and family and ask how they are, how likely are you to get a sense from the energy they give off that they are feeling genuinely confident, happy and content?

It's true that in today's world feeling strong, poised, curious and open is pretty rare

If you are like us, you will find that most people you meet are feeling unsure, burned out, anxious and/or stressed. Even after fabulous holidays and weekends spent laughing in the sunshine - most of us don't seem to feel strong, poised and full of self-belief right now. The thing is, that is a real shame because in truth, this means a lot of us are wasting our talents - just at a point in time when the world needs our talents more than ever

A lot of us lack self-assurance because we are not aware of, yet alone using our talents and strengths

Choosing Confidence is about learning how to gain self-assurance, poise and self-belief. Learning how to trust yourself and know you are enough

People who are prog...

Do you Show Up for you?

progressfull showing up Sep 22, 2022

Most of us have heard the well known saying, "80% of success is Showing Up", yet if this is true, why is it that so few of us actually do Show Up?

Let's start with what we mean by Showing Up

Showing Up is about allowing ourselves to be seen. Courage and vulnerability are the essence of what we are doing when we reveal ourself, we are being open - being open about our commitments, our accountabilities, where we are weak and where we are strong

This is Showing Up

If you think through people you know, at home and at work, you can probably come up with very few examples of people who really do Show Up who are consistent, who do what they say will do and are accountable for their actions, 100% of the time

The thing is, often the reason we aren't really truly, consistently Showing Up, is because we are not starting with Showing Up for ourselves first

Particularly if we see ourselves as 'high performers' - we will talk proudly about how we Show Up at work, and equally - if we see oursel...
