How high can you soar?

Have you ever wondered, I mean really wondered – without your baggage, just with curiosity – how much potential you actually have? How high you can actually soar?

The thing is, a lot of us have a very limited perspective on what we can achieve, what our capabilities are … ‘I can’t dance, I can’t do detail, I can’t focus, I am rubbish with numbers’. Jo has an expression she uses all the time, "Get rid of the nonsense in your head, it’s a lie! Delete it. It is a waste of your energy. Instead focus on what is true”

In reality we are all much more capable than we think we are – the thing is, discovering our potential does require courage – it doesn’t just happen. A quote we really love from the Nobel prize winning poet TS Eliot is, "only those who will risk going far, can possibly find out how far one can go”

So what’s the risk? Why does fulfilling our potential require courage?

Well – it’s about feedback…

Having either coached or facilitated over 14,000 plus global senior executives, high performers and high potentials we observe a phenomenon which, despite their success, they all have in common... they are myopic and deluded when it comes to feedback apart from in the sports arena

At Progressfull™ we are really curious about the disconnection between how in the sporting arena feedback is welcomed with voracity, and an almost visceral passion, yet in every other walk of life, human beings seem to hold back and recoil from any assessment, observation and critique of their approach

And yet...

Isn’t it fascinating that human beings can be really analytical and detailed when talking about sport, their favourite team, their favourite sportsperson and yet the same individual is hesitant, even reluctant to apply a similar approach to other parts of their life that they have more influence over - they avoid giving feedback to their children, their colleagues, peers, direct reports, even their spouse or partner - and are even worse at seeking feedback about their approach from others, avoiding or dreading feedback believing it will be too unnerving or exposing, or simply dismissing it

Having the courage to expand our perspective by seeking and welcoming feedback is truly liberating

We often have little idea how much our potential depends on feedback and the different perspectives other people can give us. Once we click this we can soar to extraordinary heights as we get rid of our insecurities and preconceived notions about our capabilities and potential

For most of us, it’s easy to continue with plodding along on the ground, doing what we have always done – and thus we remain wilfully blind to our own potential, our own ability to soar. We miss different perspectives on our own potential, we miss learning new skills to futureproof our careers, we miss new ways of improving our relationships with our loved ones, we miss out on the joy of continually making progress, of step by step living out our vision of a great life and unlocking our true potential
