The commercial case for wellbeing

“Poor mental wellbeing in our key employees is probably a bigger risk to our business than increasing inflation rates right now” a CEO of a design company said to me last week

“The thing is, as a business we are doing really well, but our lead designer has just been signed off for burnout, our clients are being really understanding, and we are supporting him as best we can, so we are OK – but really, employee wellbeing is becoming our top priority"

This successful CEO is not alone...

Looking after wellbeing is now on all our to-do lists. All employees are asking for it and super smart CEOs, and CPOs know that if you are really interested in wellbeing for your staff, then what makes a real difference, is to do something to set them up, so they can handle difficult situations, live their best lives, and essentially thrive during changing times

From finance directors of large corporations to the owner of your local artisanal bakery - everyone is now in agreement that wellbeing is important

The fundamental truth is that an organisation whose employees have strong mental wellbeing typically also has increased engagement and high productivity, as well as reduced sickness and absenteeism - which is good all round

But what should we actually do if, as leaders, business owners and HR teams, we really want to be ahead of the game?

Instead of it being an interventionist approach of return-to-work interviews, gyms at work, and employee assistance, how do we make sure people don’t get to the tipping point of having a problem?

This makes sense because in reality the effort, energy & financial cost required to 'get back to more normal', is much more time and resource heavy than a more preventative approach. A more preventative approach which, let’s face it – can give employees and organisations big and small, an enormous boost and upside - helping prevent so many sharp dips, both in wellbeing & performance

Unlike eastern medicine, in the western world health care, and by association wellbeing, is more reactive than proactive. Unfortunately, despite the medical profession's best efforts, our western approach is still more about intervention than prevention. As humans we are more inclined to wait until we are ill to change our mind-set and behaviour. So much so that doctors are paid when people are ill, in eastern medicine it’s the opposite – you go to the Doctor to keep well. If you get ill the Doctor isn’t paid. How bizarre, have we in the western world, got this whole wellbeing thing topsy turvy?

At Progressfull we think so. That’s why Progressfull is different. We are not interested in intervention. We are interested in setting people up proactively

Our approach is to get people to be as well as they can be in their minds for 52 weeks of the year, which is why we are in the wellbeing lifestyle space

Why wouldn't any commercially savvy business want this for their employees?

Being Progressfull is a mind-set and a lifestyle - for us wellbeing isn't about going to a gym to get fit, or going to a nutritionist to eat right, it’s not about magical thinking and it’s not about how you deal with someone when they are suicidal. All these activities are worthy, and worthwhile, yet we think they miss the mark. For Progressfull our approach is about helping people by giving them the regular practices, beliefs, behaviours (the how-to's, the skill) and mind-sets (the attitude, the will) to be able to thrive with the pace of life – at work at home, in their whole life

Progressfull takes wellbeing to the next level …

Our solution is not about spotting signs of mental unhealth or helping leaders be more inclusive of others with mental health issues (common offers at companies today). Our commercial offer is about actually giving all employees tangible support to completely, privately, and independently, help make their mind a great place to be. It is proactive not reactive. It sets people up for success today and in the future, rather than addressing mental health concerns once they come to the fore. Why wouldn't everyone want to futureproof wellbeing in this way?
