Thrive when change arrives

Look around and we can see that in the 21st century, change is constant and stability is rare, not only in our work life, but also in our home life

So the reality is, to flourish and enjoy success in our rapidly changing world, we must learn to thrive in the face of this change, adapting and continuously reinventing ourselves

In fact, according to bestselling author of 21 lessons for the 21st century, speaker and award winning historian Yuval Harari, the most critical skill for all of us today is the ability to cope with change and keep evolving

What this means is embracing lifelong learning, developing resilience and adaptability, and being open to new experiences and opportunities

Swapping seeing change as an energy sapping drain for embracing change, even making it central to our personal and professional growth. This way we can flourish and thrive in the face of all this uncertainty, creating brighter futures for ourselves and our world

But here's the rub - when faced with a c...

Slow down to speed up!

From city lawyers to start up CEOs through to parents of toddlers and teenagers - mental strength really is the new Zeitgeist

Don't know about you, but right now, a lot of people tell us they are feeling exhausted and overwhelmed yet also want to move faster so they can keep up and keep ahead. To get the most out of life, especially today's seemingly ever-changing whirlwind world of work and home life - we all deserve the practical tools to mentally thrive. You know what's great? Well, just like building our physical strength, we can all build our mental resilience

Ok, so how do we do that then?

The first thing to be aware of is that ensuring we refuel and recharge results in mental strength. Failing to recharge or refuel weakens our mental capacity and leaves us less strong and less able to perform at our best

The good news is, personal energy is renewable. The bad news? Many people don’t know how to recharge or refuel - do you?

At Progressfull, we believe that's why so many peop...

Change things inside you, to change things around you

From being replaced and manipulated by unregulated AI tools to the enormous challenge of climate change – a lot of us are feeling fearful of the future

It’s certainly true there is a lot going on right now which seems to be very different and larger than anything we have faced before – yet in reality from the fire of Prometheus to the mutinous neural network of 1984s "The Terminator" – humans have often been afraid of new technology. Some building structures in recent earthquakes and tsunamis would also be evidence of how we struggle to adapt to new ways of living in the face of impending natural catastrophes. Rather than doing what we can to mitigate the oncoming threat, we focus on impending doom scenarios, reach for a cold beer to drown our sorrows, and so the problem just gets bigger

Indeed, for a lot of us these external changes can seem so far outside our influence that we prevent ourselves from identifying the solutions to the very problems we are all facing

What to do?

It's...

Let it go!

What is one thing so many of us could let go of which would truly change our lives today?

Letting go of anxiety so we can increase our energy would greatly improve a lot of our lives right now. From bar-tenders to bitcoin bankers, we are realising that living with extreme anxiety is simply unsustainable

In fact, according to the World Health Organisation (WHO), as one of the two most common mental health conditions, alongside depression, anxiety costs the global economy US$ 1 trillion each year

When I first thought about this, I was actually quite angry - how can we simply 'let go' of anxiety?

Well, the truth is, that some things are a lot harder to let go of than others, yet in reality a lot of us could genuinely deal with the actual problem we are anxious about a lot more effectively, if we were able to let go of at least some of our anxiety

Why is that then?

In today’s complex and ever changing world, it is no surprise that a lot of us carry feelings of anxiety which drain ou...

Where has normal gone?

As humans what we consider normal is never really 'normal' any more - so how do we truly thrive when everything 'normal' is changing?

We don't need faster cars, but if our car is faster than our neighbours - that's good - until they get an even faster car. We like a fur coat - but only if it's a high quality fake - because you know, what would the neighbours think if they knew it was real? Offering champagne at a party used to be the highest form of hospitality - but what if our guests no longer drink booze?

What used to be smart and sharp only yesterday, might not be as smart or sharp today. So what is smarter and sharper - zooming in on a private jet or dropping in via zoom? Having a smart office address or smart agile workforce?

Change is everywhere – in global politics, in new behaviours to sustain our planet, in technology from AI to bio engineering, in healthcare, even in how we signal success to ourselves and our neighbours. And it’s super fast. As Yuval Noah Harari said...

Refresh, Reinvigorate, Recharge!

Do you use your energy well to build your mental strength?

Don’t know about you, but a lot of people are feeling low on energy right now and are asking us how they can build Mental resilience – from sports players, to successful entrepreneurs - mental strength really is the new Zeitgeist

The truth is, to get the most out of life, we all deserve the practical tools to mentally thrive and guess what – just like building our physical strength, we can all build our mental resilience

Sound good? OK, so, how do we do that then?

The first thing to be aware of is that ensuring we refuel and recharge results in mental strength. Failing to recharge or refuel weakens our mental capacity and leaves us less strong and less able to perform at our best

Many people don’t know how to recharge or refuel - do you?

If we are honest, we often feel overwhelmed, frazzled and flagging rather than flexible, and flourishing

The reality is, personal energy is renewable...

How can you really help your kids? Model mental strength

As I looked across the room at the parents gathered for the presentation on mental wellbeing in children and teenagers, what I noticed first was how some people were scrupulously taking notes

I admired their grit and determination as for sure, the challenge of how to enable our children to thrive by helping them build mental strength is one of the biggest challenges we face as a society today, especially post the pandemic

All around the world, the headlines inform us that we are all facing a monumental mountain of mental wellbeing issues in young people. We are swapping worrying about whether our kids will get the right grades with worrying about if they will either burnout through the pressure of perfectionism or drop out altogether through the feelings of somehow not fitting in because they aren’t the most successful tiktoker in their class. Yet taken to the extreme – I could also see the perfectionist parenting pitfalls

The piftfalls of seeing our children’s mental wellbeing as y...

Change - do you love it or loath it?

change resilience Apr 27, 2022

New boss, new cryptocurrency, new neighbours, new technology, new regulations, new processes, new school, even new shoes – can often come with unexpected consequences

How often do you lie through your teeth, claiming that you enjoy change because you know, being adaptable and agile is the big thing, right?

Yet in truth, change fills you with dread, secretly you fear you won’t cope, it won’t be as good as it was and all the dreams and plans you have worked so hard for, will all come to nothing. Going back to the question, 'change do you love it or loath it?', you're on the loath it side

You are not alone - in fact, under 20% of the human race are naturally resilient when it comes to change – so most likely that is not you

Most of us like certainty, we like a plan, knowing where and when we will get our morning coffee, what the home screen of our favourite social media app looks like, when the bin men will take the rubbish away, who we will spend holidays with, what is expected of u...

Are your best ideas hiding in mistakes you are too afraid to make?

On first sight, I thought I was looking at a pile of rock

– the ocean backdrop so hypnotic with it’s crashing waves, the cliffs so mesmerising it was hard to see the iconic outdoor theatre

And yet – there in full sight was the Minack theatre, the extraordinary legacy of Rowena Cade. The story of how this rocky Cornish headland transformed into a world-famous theatre is a story of one woman’s creative vision, fearless dedication, and sheer hard graft

Rowena Cade was born in 1893 and moved to Cornwall where she built her home, Minack house on the Minack headland, following World War 1 and the death of her father

Rowena was passionate about theatre and offered her garden to a local production company who wanted to stage Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. To help them, she decided to create a stage and somewhere for people to sit. What is incredible, is that Rowena didn’t use heavy machinery to create the seating area and the stage, she and her gardener - Billy Rawlings - used hand tools and...

If Darwin met Dahl...

If Roald Dahl hung out with Charles Darwin, what advice would they give us today?

They would say that sometimes, when the going gets tough, the best thing we can do is lighten up and play a little!

I don't know about you, but it's still all a bit much isn't it?  This time of year is always a bit tricky, often with cold, flat grey mornings, the festivities over, New Years resolutions less of an exciting new start to a new you and now either in the bin or proving a bit more of a grind than most of us optimistically signed up to on the 1st of January - and don't let's get started on 'the Covid' as the postman refers to the unrepentant global disruptor which seems to ruthlessly bring heartbreaking tragedy on one hand or a mild cough on the other. For some of us, it's hard to find a chink of light when we gaze uncertainly out of our windows each morning

What both Roald Dahl and Charles Darwin would recommend is, the ultimate rebellion; the real disruptive solution when faced with so much...
