Don't know about you, but right now, a lot of people tell us they are feeling exhausted and overwhelmed yet also want to move faster so they can keep up and keep ahead. To get the most out of life, especially today's seemingly ever-changing whirlwind world of work and home life - we all deserve the practical tools to mentally thrive. You know what's great? Well, just like building our physical strength, we can all build our mental resilience
The first thing to be aware of is that ensuring we refuel and recharge results in mental strength. Failing to recharge or refuel weakens our mental capacity and leaves us less strong and less able to perform at our best
At Progressfull, we believe that's why so many people say they feel so tired and overwhelmed - they literally don't know how to recharge and refuel, which is the foundation of building mental strength
Research also indicates that people who are ‘always on’ can’t think about how they did. Incorporating into our daily schedule time for short breaks and time to think and be will help us boost our productivity and ensure we are optimising our mind
Unless we take time to recharge a battery it will die, unless we recharge, we will not have the mental strength to deal with life’s hiccups and challenges. We will be drained, become easily overwhelmed, and feel in a perpetual state of wonkiness. Our body has natural 90-120 minute energy cycles called ‘ultradian rhythms’ where our bodies gently move from a high-energy state to a psychological trough. Toward the end of each cycle, the body begins to crave a period of recovery. The associated physiological and mental signals are yawning, physical restlessness, hunger and difficulty concentrating. Unfortunately, without intermittent recovery people are not physiologically capable of sustaining high performance or highly positive emotions for long periods
The really exciting bit is we don't need to wait until we can take a long holiday or even a short mini break away from our daily life - we can incorporate a simple practice into our everyday life - at work and at home to build our mental strength
The answer? Schedule time to think and be
How to reset and re-energise is to take intermittent breaks of 10 minutes every couple of hours working with our body’s natural rhythm. Doing so results in higher and more sustainable performance
The break must include time to disengage and truly change channels. This means swapping hemispheres of the brain often involving releasing our dominant left hemisphere to give way to the right hemisphere. The quickest way to do this is to take a few deep breaths. Doing this changes our state physiologically and psychologically. It also helps us build our mental muscle of focus. Just a few minutes to watch our breath go in and out will work. This is the 'be' part of Schedule time to think and be. Then we are ready to do some purposeful self-reflection so we can acknowledge our progress and decide where to course correct This is the 'think' part of Schedule time to think and be
Taking 10 minutes to think and be builds our resilience, our grit, and makes our mind a great place to be, so we are more able to adapt to change, to grow, and to do great work … taking 10 minutes to slow down so we can speed up!.
So, in truth, building mental resilience is really about ensuring we create a strong, healthy mind, that works for us rather than against us by incorporating practical tools into our everyday life so we can mentally thrive
