A super smart MD of a sizeable company headquartered in the city of London. We soon got on to the hot topic of employee Wellbeing. "The thing is," he said, "today we all need tools to navigate the chaos in our world - at work and at home. I have even got 4 super talented employees on suicide watch. I have advice from not only my own HR department, but also brilliant external psychologists and consultants, yet nothing, no MBA out there - prepares you for that," he said, with tears in his eyes – yup, MD’s have feelings of overwhelm too…
"Honestly, I am not sure a lot of the solutions we have are working", he continued. "We need Wellbeing solutions which work on an everyday basis and help prevent people getting to the stage where they want to quit their jobs, let alone the most desperate of situations"
According to Harvard’s recent publication, where they reference Gartner's research with the same findings - Wellbeing is one of the top 10 trends for businesses in 2022. Yet both publications highlight that even though leaders and HR departments are trying their best, neither existing offers in the marketplace, nor the existing offers made by companies for their staff, are engaging employees. In reality, take up is slim
So, if we know Wellbeing is so important that even companies are now starting to have it as a key metric - the enlightened ones anyway - why are we missing the mark when it comes to actually offering things that can help? If Wellbeing solutions are so needed, why are they not being taken up, when they are offered?
For anyone familiar with BBC Sounds brilliant, gritty sci-fi thriller, written and created by Brett Neichen & John Scott Dryden, starring Jessica Barden, ‘SteelHeads’, you might relate. This ultramodern podcast is about Joleen (Barden), a tennis pro who awakes from cryogenic sleep to find a world in chaos. A brave new world whose population is divided into SteelHeads, people who have been chipped, and ClearHeads, who have not. Those chipped by the government live out frighteningly fake ‘super lives,’ completely shielded from anything remotely negative, easily identified by their shiny eyes, perfect smiles and saccharine greeting of ‘another great day in Seattle!’
For a lot of us, the idea of having our Wellbeing ‘measured’ via an App - with the stats visible to the board alongside revenue and profit targets, and the new key success factor for our ‘elevator pitch’ when we bump into the board in the corridors being the width and sparkle of our smile – is pretty off-putting
So, what do we do, as leaders? What do we do when we are not only responsible for motivating and inspiring our teams during such challenging times, but also have targets for reducing our attrition rate and recruitment budget? According to the The Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), the cost of recruiting the average new employee being an eyewatering six to nine months of an employee's salary to replace her or him – the topic of Wellbeing has now got even the most hard-nosed of Finance Directors sitting to attention. So, what to do about Wellbeing?
