Mental Strength is the new Zeitgeist - do you have the practical tools to mentally thrive?

Mental Strength is the new Zeitgeist – do you have the practical tools to mentally thrive?

Success is rarely instant - from Simone Biles to leading edge scientists, from Tom Daley to tech founders we are increasingly aware that mental strength is the real secret sauce of success

In fact, in all walks of life - from start-up founders to chefs to musicians - when we look at successful people, we are fascinated to learn how they do what they do - what their secret for success is

Talent, skill and knowledge? We are increasingly recognising the much more important ingredient: mental strength

Being an Olympian not only requires immense physical talent but also an incredible amount of psychological control - resilience and determination help them bounce back from defeat and keep on keeping on. From Tom Daley - the British diver who competed in three prior Olympic games and only recently won his first ever Olympic gold medal in Tokyo, to Andrew Hoy - the Australian equestrian eventer who won both silver and bronze medals at the age of 62 and Kokona Hiraki who at 12, won a silver medal in skateboarding for Japan - their outstanding results speak to awesome mental strength

With some of the most decorated sports people in history having the courage to share their vulnerability, even sometimes opting out to protect themselves and limit the impact of extreme pressure - from Simone Biles to Michael Phelps to Naomi Osaka - we are also seeing that mental strength has many sides

What these top performers learn is to effectively regulate their emotions and attention to ensure best performance - because if they don’t keep their emotions in check - they compromise their performance under pressure. This goes for all high performers and all high performance – in fact, in a world where so many of us feel stress and pressure - this applies to all of us, when we want to win in the game we call life

As Dr Sanjay Gupta - CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent tells us:

“Never forget that the brain is exceptionally plastic,” says Dr Gupta. “It can rewire and reshape itself through your experiences and habits, and a lot of this remoulding can be achieved in a mere twelve weeks. “It’s like building any other muscle.”

Whether you want to accelerate your productivity at work, smash more goals, exercise more, reduce your alcohol intake – or train for the 2024 Paris Olympics, adopting some of the psychological skills used by Olympians to build your mental muscles and increase your mental strength will help us all win the game of life

So how do we do this? How do we build mental strength to mentally thrive and win the game of life?

From the latest findings in neuroscience and sports psychology – today there are some fantastic resources now available to us to help grow our mental strength – brilliant books, podcasts, blogs and courses - yet if you are anything like us - when we are ambitious and determined to learn and grow, we can waste hours listening, reading and watching yet never applying, never actually doing what it takes to put in the work and build our mental strength
