A good starting point for how to open our minds to open our world is to start with understanding a bit about what is a 'growth mind-set'
The concept of a growth mind-set first appeared in 1988 as a theory relating to learning and education. It was cited as the reason why super smart kids can still fail, despite their actual capability. The central thought is that a child’s attitude towards taking on a challenge, instead of their innate ability, was the main factor for success
Stanford professor and psychologist Carol Dweck talks about two approaches that can determine results: ‘fixed mind-set’ and ‘growth mind-set’. A fixed mind-set is the idea that our abilities are high or low, and there is nothing we can do to change that. A growth mind-set is the view that our abilities are adaptable or changeable
A different way of framing a growth mind-set is to frame it as prioritising progress - the truth is that the first step to leading our best life is to realise we are all a work in progress
Taking small steps forward to make progress in the most important areas of our lives, even when surrounded by turbulence and change – at work, at home, in our whole life - is a great way of living. This is living with a growth mind-set
So how do we get a growth mind-set, a 'can do' attitude, and take these first steps towards living our best life? How do we lean in, live more fully in the moment, and let go of our baggage by focusing in on progress rather than perfection, on embracing change and challenge, rather than fearing failure? How do we grow?
We spend our entire lives in our minds, yet very few of us ensure they are a great place to be by carrying out the work to open our minds - the regular practice of tidying up, chucking out, and organising what is in our minds so we can make progress
Recognising that when we are stuck, when we have a fixed and frozen mind-set rather than a growth mind-set - we cannot unstick ourselves or unfreeze on our own as well, or as much, as we can when we have the help of others. We need external impetus, external input and external support. We need the tools for construction
Very crucially, this is not just any impetus, input, or support, we need it from a place that has real expertise, we need it from someone who knows what they are doing, we need it from someone who has gone before us, trodden the road we are on so to speak, yet they are ahead of us. Then the input is credible, then the impetus works, then the support moves us forward and progress begins
