Have you ever wondered, whether the new recruit everyone is talking about is actually going to be as good as everyone says they will be – only to watch as they crash and burn, sometimes even at the end of the first week?
What’s more, have you ever realised, with a sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach – that new recruit is actually you?
The thing is, when we excitedly step into our new office, head held high, knowing we smashed the interview process, squeaking slightly in our pristine sneakers as we try to look casually confident, clutching our new laptop – we suddenly realise we are entering a war zone…
Past experience tells us, scattered amongst the friendly new faces and shiny new opportunities - there are totally toxic people, projects and politics. The nature of human beings and organisations is that hiding behind even the most artfully cool indoor plant, inviting designer sofa and sparkling water fountain there may well be trouble – but because we are new, we just don’t know where, what and who to watch out for
We spend our first 100 days listening, making notes, nodding and ‘adding value’ – we share our ideas, our insights and start to form relationships. ‘Everyone is so great round here’, ‘What a fabulous company’, ‘How much money we can make if we just change that supplier’, ‘You know, I think we can get to market leader super fast in that new category, can’t see why you guys haven’t done it before really’ …
And there you have it – the beginning of the end …
Despite working every weekend, saying yes to all the new projects and even bringing in some great new suppliers and talent – we are on our way to crash and burn… And then our new boss asks us to present our initial findings to the leadership team – tomorrow morning at 8
Really we shouldn’t be so hard on ourselves, our intentions are good, we genuinely do want to add value and justify our recruitment as well as hit the ground running in the first 100 days. Yet even the best organisations are messy and complex, we cannot be successful from day 1 to 100 without a clear plan of what to do in our first 100 days
Without a straight forward and practical structure it is almost impossible to sift through all the new information and find the genuine nuggets we need to genuinely create real momentum and value as fast as everyone expects us to
So, what’s the answer? How do we step into that new office, calm, poised ready for all the challenge, ready for all the change, ready to make an impact, in the right way in our first 100 days?
For some of us, reading ‘how to create a 100 day plan’ books and consultancy blog posts can be useful, the thing is – which one to go for? If we are not careful we can waste precious energy and time trawling the internet, scanning paragraph after paragraph – searching for the perfect book, insights and tools. There are certainly some great ones out there – it’s just not only finding them that’s time consuming but also working out how to actually apply them in a way which saves us time and energy – rather than being another thing to add to our never-ending to do list – at the end of an incredibly intense day in a new role
The great news is, having spent 25 years helping senior execs, high performers and high potentials transition into their new roles, at Progressfull - we don’t just know what good looks like, we know what great looks like. The interesting thing is, we observe that despite their fierce ambition and external success, very few people start their new role with a meaningful, insightful plan, structure or tools, to guide their success – even though all are essential to accelerate and move forward in their new roles
Even the highest performers don’t have an actionable plan to ensure they are successful after their first 100 days! So we decided to create one
Progressfull have created a Mini masterclass (our name for a focussed short course) that explains the factors for successfully hitting the ground running and excelling in a new role. Focus areas and expected results are explained, templates and action plans shared all so you can ensure you focus your energy well. The 5 high level activities in Focus areas really give you a head start. The associated actions for each Focus area explain what is required to achieve and maintain success
