How to Show Up, when the going gets tough

Frankly, are you over it?

The relentless uncertainty, the daily "can we, can't we, shall we, shan't we" of mask-wearing, social meet-ups and staycations, has now writhed it's way into our morning coffee-catch ups and our message feeds. The snake of uncertainty brings with it small, sneaking, daily confrontations with tricky choices, the relentless drip, drip, drip of new decisions, draining our energy and distracting our focus

With every glimmer of fun and freedom, we now peer into the shadows, calculating the risks and assessing the new behaviours to adopt. To keep safe, to keep strong. We have swapped worrying about 'if our job has enough purpose' for 'will I still have a job' and 'how do I keep myself and my family safe'. The statistics collaborate with our instinctive refocus on the basics of survival - whether looking at the economy, the local area R number, or the 30% of Corona survivors who are now likely to suffer PTSD

Yup, for pretty much all of us, our current reality is really, really tough

Not surprising then, that some of us are floundering. How to look forwards when we don't know what forwards looks like anymore? Our steps are becoming smaller and our visions are becoming narrower. Hard to hope, when everything around us is in havoc

I don't know if you have noticed though, some of us are - whisper it - flourishing. Some of us are deftly pivoting our businesses, learning new skills and rising to the challenges. What are they, stupid?  Do they not see the news?  Do they not care?  What makes them able to rise up, keep going, keep smiling, when so many of us are slumping, exhausted at the end of each day, into our sofas?

Here is our hope. These are the people who are Showing Up

They are coming out of the shadows, they are showing spirit and they are standing strong. Thinking creatively and courageously, taking control and speaking out, growing their businesses and making magical moments, no matter what. They are not necessarily cleverer, richer or luckier than us. What they are able to do, which so many of us struggle with, especially when times get really tough - is Show Up

Showing up is about allowing ourselves to be seen. It is about revealing ourselves. It is about revealing our true characters, our true natures. This is what we all really need right now. We need people who have the strength to Show Up, to not be batted back by insecurities about our futures, by imposter syndrome, by the fear of not being enough when faced with such great challenges and demand for change. People who can put the best of themselves forward, bringing us all hope, hope for our businesses, our communities, our families and our world

I wonder, if one of those people could be you?

Having the skills and the belief system to Show Up, against the odds, is actually something we are all capable of. We don't have to have an incredible IQ, we don't have to be a 'typical Alpha,' we don’t have to have extraordinary willpower or amazing self control - we can all do this

The first step, is to understand the beliefs, behaviours and mind-sets we need to adopt to help us Show Up. These are the things which people who Show Up think, feel and do to make things happen, even during tough times. The second step, is to understand the things which are stopping us from Showing Up and the third step, is to note down a simple plan to help us make a step of progress each day towards Showing Up. We do this step, by achievable step, making small steps of progress forwards. Having our own unique navigational system to guide us means it is totally possible for all of us to Show Up, even when times are tough
