The fact is, whilst it might be so much easier to do things on our own, in win or bust situations, competitive advantage often boils down to excellent teamwork and collaboration
As Ken Blanchard, author and motivational speaker famously says,
Being part of a truly brilliant team which challenges each other creatively, working together seemingly effortlessly, to deliver fantastic results, is one of the best feelings us human beings can have. It gives us a sense of success, achievement and belonging - all wrapped up in one energising bundle. Yet, from sports arenas, to Silicon Valley start ups, many teams fail due to mediocre team performance
The thing is, whilst we may roar our advice and despair from the sidelines as we watch the missteps and mistakes, often with a combination of frustration and judgement, how many of us stop to think about how strong our own team muscles are? How do we actually contribute to the teams we are in - at work, at home, in our whole life?
Do we really know the things, and this is the real deal breaker, then actually do the things, which have the biggest positive impact on the teams we are a part of? Or could someone rightfully roar their despair at our team performance too?
Frankly, excellent teamwork is not simple, take a look at any truly high performing team and we can clearly see there is no quick fix. Building great teams is an on-going process. A high performing team doesn’t just happen, it takes focus and effort
Creating a clear and compelling picture of where you want to get to in your team is important, yet equally important is gaining a clear and compelling picture of the twists and turns that may influence your development journey as a team. The more we can observe, notice and pay attention to what is happening within the team the better we will be able to adapt and course correct. This involves deciding what not to do as well as deciding what to do
For example how do we make decisions, how do we manage our time together and how do we resolve conflicts that arise. Who will do what, what is acceptable behaviour and what is unacceptable. What approach do we want to take with each other, to collaborate or to compete?
Figuring out these things helps chart a route to success and boosts the team’s performance…
