On the one hand we are surrounded by evidence that change is the only way forwards, on the other hand it can be pretty overwhelming and is often one of the reasons we feel stressed and frazzled on a regular basis
Here's the thing about change, most people - especially people who call themselves high performers, will talk confidently about how they are open to change. We are keen to be on the project teams, keen to be in the new roles, keen to not be left behind. And yet - when it actually comes down to doing things differently, working in completely new ways, with new people, new systems, new processes - very few of us actually welcome change
What's more, from Jo's experience, whenever she speaks about building change muscles in business 99% of people say they are agile, they are up for it, they are open to change yet once she actually delves a bit deeper the truth becomes patently clear. Often we are only open to change as long as we are the ones deciding on the change and we are the ones introducing the change - in essence when we own the change
The thing is, certainly in a work context unless we are the CEO, we don’t often have the luxury of introducing and owning change. Our role - more often than not - is to get on board, get with it, and deliver it!
Apart from the fact that it trips us up if we are holding the mind-set, we are open to change, we are agile, we have a growth mind-set. This is because this is at odds with the reality we experience when change is introduced in business. The same 99% of us feel confused, bewildered at the number of concerns, issues and reservations we have when change is spoken about and often become resistant to changes concluding it’s the change that isn’t working – hence we inevitably feel frazzled, fractured and fraught
We aren’t as open and agile as we thought and our growth mind-set is, let’s face it a bit more selective than we care to admit! We know that whilst we see ourselves as ambitious and determined to achieve our professional potential yet we also feel overwhelmed by the expectations and demands of today’s ever changing working environment
Because so many people tell us that they want to know how to deal successfully with the emotional rollercoaster ride every change involves and do so with openness, mental strength, and confidence – we decided to create an Upskill (our name for a course or masterclass)
Enjoying the ride doesn’t happen looking in from the outside, or from the side lines, if we’re half in and half out. It only happens when we fully embrace the adventure
