Don't stop thinking about tomorrow

Never would Nathan Apodaca have imagined that…

After being inspired by his daughter to try making a TikTok video, a video of him skateboarding while lip-synching Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ would mean he ended up launching a merchandise line, starring in commercials with Snoop Dogg, buying a house, and even appearing in President Joe Biden's virtual inauguration parade

Never would the iconic 1970s band Fleetwood Mac which extols the virtues of shaking off the past in it’s iconic song, ‘Don’t stop thinking about tomorrow’ have imagined that...

Their fiftieth-anniversary album ‘Don’t Stop’ and the incredible ‘Rumours’ would be the third most-streamed album and third highest-selling vinyl of 2021, respectively

The thing is, we never do know what tomorrow will bring - but what is definitely true is that if we don’t take some risks, if we don’t challenge ourselves and re-imagine ourselves - life is still going to happen, even if we are standing still, the meter is still ticking, life is still happening

As John Wayne said...

As the meter keeps on ticking whether we are getting somewhere or just standing still, how about we start thinking about taking steps forwards to reimagine our own futures?

As humans we are designed to be future-oriented - planning and setting intentions give us the motivation to get things done

It makes sense that taking those steps today, completing those tasks today, secures us a brighter outcome in the future. Farmers plant crops to ensure an abundant harvest, women endure labour to have a bouncing new-born baby, and top athletes train hard to be at their best on the big competition day

Most of us are also familiar with the dark side to anticipation when we let negative projections overshadow best possible outcomes. We all know that pandemics are not just the stuff of history and movies - our best-laid plans definitely can and do need to adapt for unforeseen situations. It’s certainly true that in today’s uncertain times, a lot of us have experienced more of the opposite of anticipation - dread. Dread can fill us with anxiety and we can feel overwhelmed by pessimistic thinking

Particularly when we look at the world of work, this is where a big opportunity lies. Because of the rapidly changing world of work - a lot of us would experience much more happiness in the present, if we took steps today to futureproof our work life – so we can anticipate and look forward to the opportunities we can create by taking the risk, trying something new. What’s our equivalent of Nathan’s TikTok video or Fleetwood Mac re-releasing an album?

When we futureproof something, we design or change it so that it will continue to be useful or successful in the future if the situation changes
