Quiet quitting was first talked about on Twitter by Dr Justin Carrington in March 2022. He warned of an age of 'quiet quitting' due to burnout, poor leadership, and lack of empowerment. Next thing it was all over TikTok, where users promoted it as an alternative to joining ‘the Great Resignation’, seeing disillusioned workers resign post lockdown, as companies gave up WFH. However, the problem then became finding another job
The thing is, if this is you (and according to a recent Gallup poll you are not alone, 50% of the US workforce are quiet quitting) it’s not just work - you could also be quiet quitting your passions, your dreams, your relationships, your friendships, or other commitments to things that really matter to you
So, is this concept of quiet quitting the smart secret to navigating a challenging world, or is it in fact quitting feeling fulfilled, making the most of our talents, the thrill of stretching ourselves and creating great things – the joy of Showing Up for what matters most to us?
It might feel like this new quiet quitting is a revolution, a rebellious act of taking a break or well-earned rest. Finally, assertively, setting our own boundaries. But the danger is, surely if our work, our relationship, our friendship isn’t good enough for us to love and relish, then isn’t the answer to move on? By failing to have the courage to properly remove ourselves from a situation that is no longer working for us, we are potentially wasting our own talent and time - at work, at home, in our whole life
Showing Up is about holding our ground, facing any challenge that comes our way - head on, and allowing ourselves to be seen. Courage and vulnerability are the essence of what we are doing when we reveal ourself, we are being open, being open about who we are with all of our faults and frailties, and how we choose to spend our time and energy. Showing up for our commitments, and showing up for ourselves, every day of our lives – at work, at home, in our whole life. This is Showing Up. This is not quiet quitting
Most of us feel uncomfortable even articulating this and yet if we don’t, we can’t become who we are meant to be! A good first step is to be courageous and choose to act ‘as if’ we were our best advocate, our greatest cheer leader, our biggest encourager
What we have experienced at Progressfull is that when people do this, they consistently surprise themselves by becoming a little bit more like the person they imagined they never could be, yet always wanted to be, and they always become more like the person they were supposed to be
