Your light, playful, learning Lifestyle

How do you swap feeling stuck for feeling smart and sharp?

Look, listen and learn to be playful, making progress the Progressfull way

Are you pursuing your personal interests and passions? Are you chasing your professional ambitions? Lifelong learning gives us a great sense of purpose, fulfillment and satisfaction, at work, at home – in our whole life. It’s really all about connecting with our innate curiosity and childlike willingness to ‘have a play, have a go’ – learn something new

But in reality, most of us adults definitely don’t have a lifestyle which makes learning easy, so we miss out on all the progress, the passion, and fulfilment and can end up feeling stuck

Stuck because in truth we humans have a natural drive for curiosity – to learn, to explore, to play, and to grow. So if we aren’t learning, we aren’t making progress – we feel like we are stressed, stuck and stagnating – wasting our potential

Learning new stuff, new ideas, new skills, encourages us to improve our own quality of life. We can increase our sense of self-worth by making progress with our ideas and goals and things that inspire us – by learning and playing

Playing? Seriously?

When we think about learning and children, one of the biggest concepts right now is the idea of the ‘growth mind-set’. Growth–mindset is all about learning to swap feelings of inability or inadequacy in the face of challenges, with recognising an opportunity to learn and progress. There are profound benefits to learning this approach. People who choose a growth mind-set, who prioritise progress rather than perfection, can more easily manage stress, build stronger relationships with people at work and at home, cope with failure better, and develop attributes to help futureproof their careers. This is how they stay sharp and smart

Learning how to adopt a 'can-do' approach to learning new things is always an advantage in life – it demonstrates that we are adaptable and willing to evolve...

Within our jobs, organisation's and ever-changing world, encouraging a growth mind-set plays an important role in helping us navigate turbulence as well as improve resilience because we feel more confident and capable of handling difficulties

The question for us though, is if it's so helpful for anxiety and wellbeing, and if it's so helpful for increasing creativity and reducing stress, why on earth is it so difficult for us to do?

Why in truth, do so many of us find even the thought of 'learning” so overwhelming we stay stuck, not having a play with new skills, new ideas, new concepts?

At Progressfull™ we have a point of view that can help you understand why - our observations are gleaned from working with over 14,000 high performers globally in the last two decades

Our first observation is that most people have created a pattern in their mind that learning as a concept is closely connected with education. And education requires years of hard study, usually in a classroom setting where writing (handwritten or digitally) things to remember is key. So, most people have created this pattern in their mind, 'in order for me to learn something new it’s going to be arduous, take a long time, be in a distilled environment separate from the real world, and involves lots of writing (handwritten or digital)'

If we have this pattern in our mind, our mind is consistently telling us that these things have to be present, or we won’t learn, and the activity won't have value. Add into this fact that the research posits that it only takes a small amount of time in any sitting to reap the rewards from learning, and our mind is truly triggered - 'I have never truly learned anything worthwhile or meaningful in a small amount of time, that is simply preposterous!' It is hard for our mind, and therefore us, to compute and accept

What is truly fantastic is that we now know we can ignore the purists - we can watch videos to learn, we also now know that listening to a book instead of reading it isn’t cheating – it’s just using our ears rather than our eyes. One study by Beth Rogowsky, associate professor of education at Bloomsburg University of Philadelphia, asked students either to read a nonfiction book or listen to the audio version, found no significant differences in how much of it they absorbed. We can even learn whilst listening to a podcast – doing the laundry, walking the dog, or on the commute to and from work

Being Playful is often the first step to trying out new roles, new hobbies, new passions and even new projects at work. This helps us live a more balanced life and can lead to new opportunities both at work and at home

Being Playful  means we are more resilient, able to adapt to change more quickly, and create a more holistic sense of who we are - at home, at work, in our whole life - as a partner, a parent, a team-player, a friend, a leader and an enthusiast for a particular sport or hobby

Look at children and you will see they do this naturally, they try new skills, they make up games, they join new teams, they try out a lot of stuff to see what will make them laugh the hardest, and have the most fun - they have a go!

In today's uncertain world - who doesn't want to learn, to keep sharp and smart, to adapt quickly to change, regain curiosity, determination and wonder and quite simply - have more laughter and fun in their lives?

If you would like to discover more about how you can Be Playful we have an Upskill (our name for a course/masterclass) to help you do just that – you can learn more about it here
